Takamine
Japanese pioneer of the amplified acoustic guitar for the stage.
Born in 1959 as a modest family workshop set up at the foot of Mount Takamine, in central Japan, the house took the mountain's name in 1962. The arrival of luthier Mass Hirade in 1968 first pushed production toward the classical guitar, before Takamine turned to acoustic amplification and became one of the first manufacturers to offer electro-acoustic models.
The brand owes its reputation to the Palathetic pickup, an under-saddle system developed in the late 1970s that pairs a transducer per string with a built-in preamp, designed to hold up on stage without losing the tone of the wood.
